LWPTSA DEIB Workshop with Ilsa Govan — April 8
Acting on Teachable Moments: Talking with Children about Current Events
*Collaboration is Issaquah PTSA*
When events such as ICE raids, wars, and protests occur locally or nationally, children often react with questions, fears, and misunderstandings. Ignoring these moments can unintentionally reinforce silence, misinformation, or othering. This workshop supports families and those who work with children in responding with intention, care, and clarity in the midst of tensions.
Participants explore how to create nonjudgmental spaces where young people of different ages can process feelings, ask questions, and build understanding without shame or blame. Families learn practical strategies to develop emotional vocabulary, foster empathy and belonging, examine stereotypes, offer reassurance, and support a sense of agency. The session emphasizes that adults do not need to have all the answers—only the willingness to stay present, curious, and grounded in core values that support dignity, love, and shared responsibility.
WHEN: Tuesday, April 8 from 11-12:30 pm
